TRUSTroke

TRUSTroke proposes a novel trustworthy by design and privacy-preserving AI-based platform to assist clinicians, patients and caregivers in the management of acute and chronic phases of ischemic stroke. The project integrates clinical and patient-reported data, outcomes and experience for a trustworthy assessment of disease progression and risks. The TRUSTroke project will therefore enable more personalised and effective management of stroke, as well as providing inter-hospital benchmarking and sharing best practices.

Specifically, TRUSTroke will address the risks of:

• clinical severity at discharge,
• clinical worsening leading to unplanned hospital readmissions,
• poor mobility, incomplete recovery and unfavourable clinical long-term outcomes; and
• stroke recurrence.

To this purpose, a federated learning infrastructure will enable multiple clinical sites to build several trustworthy AI-based predictive models by leveraging stroke data without compromising privacy and implementing best-in-class security and privacy protocols.

TRUSTroke consortium

The TRUSTroke consortium, led by Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), has expertise that covers the entire value chain from patient and clinicians, through to technology development, patient engagement and empowerment, business development, and trustworthiness assessment. The consortium includes: 4 large stroke centres in research-intensive hospitals of Europe (VHIR, KU Leuven, FPG, UL) representing southern, central, western and northern European patients. It includes also the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), which is one of the world’s largest centres for scientific research on fundamental physics, Eurecat (EUT) is the leading Technology Centre in Catalonia, Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI), two leading research institutions in Italy and Slovenia (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche and JSI), two SMEs and EATRIS.
